The massive immigration of Irish folk in the 18th and 19th century is legendary. Stories of heartbreak and heroism have been recorded in the traditional music and tales of the people. From exquisitely poignant laments of separation and loss to ribald, defiant "come-all-ye" sing-alongs, Castlebay celebrates the spectrum of the Irish experience.

The ancient music of Ireland has provided rich inspiration for many musicians, and Fred Gosbee and Julia Lane are no exception. Both have had an avid interest in collecting and performing this music for most of their lives, especially those songs that came to New England with immigrants. In particular, Julia Lane's dedication has won her three awards for her playing of the "clarsach" or Celtic harp. Their performances feature poignant ballads sung in Lane's ethereal soprano and Gosbee's rich baritone interspersed with joyous dance tunes played on fiddle and tin whistle. The duo will share lore and history asssociated with the music as well as their own experiences travelling in Ireland. In addition to playing traditional music, Gosbee and Lane compose their own musical works, many of which have their roots in the Celtic musical legacy. Both have received critical praise for their skilled songwriting and have included this music on many of their 16 recordings. Castlebay has toured the eastern US, Scotland England and Ireland playing at arts centers, folk clubs, festivals, schools and on radio and television.

In 2010 they released a recording of Irish songs, accompanied poetry and storytellingBards & Blarney . .

We are the music makers and we are the dreamers of dreams
Wandering by lone sea breakers and sitting by desolate streams
World losers and world forsakers on whom the pale moon gleams
Yet we are the movers and shakers of the world - forever, it seems...
