benefit concert for the Maine Folklife Center

BANGOR—The traditional culture of Downeast, Maine isn´t popularly known for its Irish origins. Still, a little-known, yet longstanding Irish tradition has thrived and evolved in Maine more than two centuries. Even today, according to the U.S. Census Bureau, more than 15 percent of Maine residents claim some percentage of Irish ancestry.
This St. Patrick´s Day season, the Maine Folklife Center hopes to bring that cultural heritage alive by hosting the Downeast Irish Review, March 13, at the Union Street Brick Church in Bangor. All proceeds benefit the Maine Folklife Center of the University of Maine.
The evening will feature four musical and storytelling performances that highlight the rich blending of Irish and Downeast culture.
Castlebay will present stories and songs of Maine laced with wit and humor. In the style of an old-time variety show, singing duo Julia Lane and Fred Gosbee will treat the audience to a musical journey through time and across the Atlantic. Poignant ballads sung in Lane's ethereal soprano and Gosbee's rich baritone are interspersed with evocative airs and joyous dance tunes played on Celtic harp, guitar, fiddle and tin whistle. Pithy stories and ancient lore round out the duo´s personable style. Castlebay has toured the Eastern U.S., Ireland, England and Scotland playing at festivals and arts centers, as well as on radio and television.
Van Reid, of Edgecomb, Maine, celebrated author of The Moosepath League epic, will tell stories in the Downeast folklore tradition that relate to the region´s unique Irish heritage.
Ballykelti will play traditional music from Ireland and the British Isles, featuring Kristin Tescher on a double-strung celtic harp, 12-string guitar, and fiddle; Luthier Nick Apollonio on cittern, 5-string fiddle and 12-string guitar; and accordion player Chris Brinn from Padstow, Cornwall, England (the Celtic music corner of the country). They all sing as well and have a combined repertoire of more than 2,000 songs.
Shamrock Dancers are adult Irish step dancers from the Thomas School of Dance in Bangor. The Shamrock Dancers love not only dancing, but also inviting others to join in the fun. Karen Childs, Rachel Case, Rachel Schwarzman, Christine Chou, Kristin Dillon, Hannah Thieme, and Jennifer Gilbert perform the Faery Reel and other Irish traditional dances.
Though any one of these artists could entertain for an entire program, their combined energy and talent will provide a multi-faceted and delightful evening. Come and enjoy a perfect adjunct to traditional holiday festivities filled with music, wonder, laughter, and nostalgia. Tickets for the Downeast Irish Revew may be purchased in advance from the Maine Folklife Center by calling (207) 581-1891. You can also purchase tickets at Bookmarcs or the Grasshopper Shop in downtown Bangor.
